The 21-year-old Argentina international has left Manchester United to join Premier League rivals Chelsea, putting pen-to-paper on a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge

And then he was gone. Manchester United outcast Alejandro Garnacho has departed the Red Devils, leaving behind the Carrington ‘Bomb Squad’ of which he has been a part this summer, and completed his £40million move to Chelsea.

The Argentina international, still just 21, has inked a deal with the Blues until 2032. His exit has been on the cards since he grew increasingly exasperated with his role under Ruben Amorim – despite being a regular under the Portuguese for much of last season – and finally spoke out after May’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, a match which he started on the bench.

Days later, Amorim told Garnacho to find himself a new club this summer. Garnacho duly spent pre-season training away from United’s first-team having expressed a desire to leave. And now he has his move, to long-time admirers, with Chelsea having initially sought to do a deal in January. As well as the £40m, United also hold a 10 percent sell-on clause.

“It’s an incredible moment for my family and I to join this great club,” Garnacho said, whose agents, Carlos Cambeiro and Quique de Lucas, were initially spotted at Stamford Bridge in January. “I can’t wait to get started.

“I watched the Club World Cup and to join the world champions is special – we’re the best team in the world! It’s amazing to be here and I’m very happy.”

Garnacho joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2020 and scored 26 goals in 144 appearances after progressing through the academy.

He becomes Chelsea’s ninth arrival of the summer and fifth attacking addition, following Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Estevao and Jamie Gittens, the Blues finally pushing through his signing after completing Christopher Nkunku’s exit, the French international moving to AC Milan.

But he also comes at the personal request of head coach Enzo Maresca, who believes the opportunity to add Garnacho to his attack – particularly at that price – was too good to pass up.
