Arne Slot has given an intriguing hint that Liverpool could be in line for a busy deadline day. The Reds have already had an eye-catching window having welcomed over £300m worth of new talent to Anfield.

But the reigning Premier League champions aren’t quite satisfied yet. They have been linked with a move for Newcastle’s wantaway forward Alexander Isak all summer, while Marc Guehi is also a candidate for a late move.

Liverpool have already had bids turned down for both players and asked what he expects from the final day of the window, boss Slot did not rule out any further business.

Speaking after Sunday’s 1-0 win against Arsenal at Anfield, the Dutchman said: “Quite busy because I have to take a flight at two o’clock! On a serious note, let’s wait and see.

“I haven’t spoken to [sporting director] Richard [Hughes] yet. I don’t think it’s a surprise we are trying to see if we can strengthen the squad but if that isn’t possible we are more than happy to do that with this team.”

One deal that Liverpool could do is a swoop for Guehi. Palace are open to letting him leave, with just a year remaining on his contract. And Liverpool’s need appears to have grown after defender Ibrahima Konate was withdrawn through injury.

Asked if that could trigger Liverpool into moving for a new defender, Slot replied: “It’s not a way of asking it. I could only not take one player into the game so I had to leave one out and that was a centre back.

“I think we were quite well in terms of centre backs. I think it was only cramp so I don’t think it was an injury. We have to find out in the upcoming games.”

While Slot has not ruled out any further business, his rival bosses have also given intriguing answers when asked about the futures of their players. Eddie Howe has admitted he is clueless over where Isak will be playing his football when the window finally shuts.

He said: “I don’t know, I’m not party to any talks going on. I’ve been preparing for this game and you can imagine that’s demanding enough. So I will find out like everyone else.”

Meanwhile, Palace boss Oliver Glasner is keeping his fingers crossed that Guehi remains at Selhurst Park. Speaking before his side’s game vs Aston Villa at the weekend, he said: “Everybody can see how important Marc is, so honestly, I don’t know, but I really deeply hope that Marc will play for us at Villa Park. I deeply hope that Marc will play until the end of the season for us.”

Guehi was eventually named in the starting XI at Villa Park, captaining Palace on what could potentially be his final appearance for the club.
