Andre Onana has completed his loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, but there is no option to buy him in the deal and Manchester United won’t receive a loan fee for him

Andre Onana will double his money at Trabzonspor after finally sealing a loan escape route from his Manchester United misery.

Cameroon goalkeeper Onana flew into Turkey with his wife Melanie on Thursday afternoon to seal a switch to the Turkish Super Lig club having only appeared once for United this season, in the shock Carabao Cup loss to League Two Grimsby Town.

Having suffered a hamstring injury in the summer Onana was forced to miss all of United’s pre-season matches, with Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir featuring in the club’s three Premier League fixtures thus far.

Ruben Amorim brought in Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day, and that move coupled with Onana’s shaky form since his £47.2million move from Inter Milan two years ago effectively sealed the 29-year-old’s exit.

However, the Mail report that there is no option for Trabzonspor to buy Onana next summer included in the loan deal, and nor have the Turkish club paid United a loan fee to recruit him for the campaign.

Perhaps most surprisingly, the report adds that Onana will double his weekly wages with Trabzonspor covering them in their entirety for the year. Onana recently saw his wages drop from around £170,000 a week to £120,000 a week – £67,000 a week after tax – due to United failing to qualify for the Champions League, and Turkey has a more favourable tax rate.

United wished Onana well in a statement, saying: “In his first season at United, Andre was part of the squad that lifted the Emirates FA Cup following a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

“Onana played 50 times in his second campaign and our no.24 has now agreed a loan move to Trabzonspor. The move has been completed ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday. We would like to wish Andre good luck.”

But after a string of high-profile errors during his time at the club, plenty of United fans welcomed the move on social media.

Responding to the club’s Instagram post, one fan wrote: “Good Riddance. Better late than never!”

Another added: “Please just let him leave for free in case they bring him back, we won’t mind,” while a third said simply: “End of an error.”

Onana did receive some support online after the move though, with one fan writing: “The problem isn’t you, the problem is the Manchester United dump. Everyone who escapes from that dump ends up hitting their prime anyway, Onana.”
