Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag last autumn, and Ruben Amorim will have to improve the team’s results if he is to make it through the winter still in charge

Jamie O’Hara has doubled down on his calls for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make a sensational return to Manchester United and replace Ruben Amorim.

The Norwegian coach is currently out of work following his dismissal from Besiktas at the end of last month after they failed to qualify for the league phase of the Conference League, losing against Lausanne-Sport – another club under the Ineos umbrella like United – in the play-offs. His team managed just a 1-1 draw in Switzerland before suffering a damaging 1-0 defeat on home soil in Istanbul seven days later.

It marked Solskjaer’s maiden managerial stint since United showed him the door in November 2021. The ex-Red Devils striker had stepped away from the dugout for over three years before taking the reins at Besiktas, overseeing merely 29 fixtures during his brief Turkish adventure.

Just 24 hours after his Besiktas exit, O’Hara floated the idea that United should bring back their former boss. Speaking ahead of the Burnley match last month, the outspoken pundit told Sky Sports News: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ain’t the worst shout in the world.

“He can come in, he can be a stopgap manager, interim manager, get players back onside.” O’Hara elaborated: “I believe that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, if you get him back in, go back to the formation that they were playing before, get the players back onside, give them a bit of freedom, and I think they can maybe just calm everything down.”

Several weeks on, O’Hara has reinforced that position. “I can’t believe Ruben Amorim is still in charge,” he declared on talkSPORT this week.

“When are they going to let it go? When are they going to just… do what Sheffield United have done, just swallow their pride [and say] ‘we got this wrong?'” Sheffield United have recently made a managerial U-turn, with Chris Wilder stepping in to replace Ruben Selles, just three months after the latter’s mutual agreement to depart from the Championship club.

O’Hara concluded: “Get Ole back in. They can’t carry on doing this. They’ll go down. They’ll be playing Rotherham [United] next season.
