Ryan Giggs has not been on the touchline as a manager since the early months of Coronavirus, but the Manchester United legend may be on his way back to the touchline

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is plotting a return to management after stepping down as director of football at Salford City. The 51-year-old had been part of the backroom staff at the EFL side.

He often got himself back into a tracksuit and stood alongside Ammie’s boss, Karl Robinson. From a management point of view, Giggs has not been on a touchline since October 14, 2020, when his Wales side overcame Bulgaria 1-0 in the Nations League.

Giggs successfully guided Wales to Euro 2020 but could not manage his country in the competition. He stepped aside in November, after being arrested on suspicion of assault, before officially resigning from the role in the summer of 2022.

With Euro 2020 being delayed by a year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Giggs was not able to manage his side in the tournament.

Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on the assault charges and charges of coercive and controlling behaviour. A retrial was subsequently abandoned when his former partner, Kate Greville, the alleged victim, refused to testify.

Giggs was succeeded by Robert Page, who led Wales to the knockout stages of Euro 2020, only to be defeated 4-0 by Denmark in the round of 16. Page also took Wales to the World Cup, where they failed to progress from a group featuring England, the USA and Iran.

A matter of years after he had to walk away from Wales, the Sun reports Giggs will no longer be involved with Salford, a club he once held a stake in until a consortium led by David Beckham and Gary Neville bought him out in May. The report goes on to claim that the former winger is keen to get back into management.

In January, Giggs confessed to BBC Radio Manchester he was relishing his role at Salford but was also eyeing a return to the dugout.

He said: “I had the stint as Wales manager and loved it. At the moment I’m enjoying being at Salford as director of football and enjoy watching the team, happy where I am.

“But eventually I would like to get back into management. On matchday I still get as excited as ever, probably more so than ever.”

Giggs donned the Welsh jersey 64 times during his career, netting 12 goals. His only other managerial experience was a brief spell at United, stepping in for four matches when David Moyes was dismissed.

He led the team to victories over Hull City and Norwich City but suffered defeat against Sunderland and managed a 1-1 draw with Southampton. He then served two seasons as Louis van Gaal’s right-hand man at Old Trafford before leaving the club in 2016 when the Dutchman was dismissed.

As a player, he clinched 13 Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as two Champions League titles, four FA Cups and four League Cups.
