Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha was over the moon after the Red Devils’ 2-1 triumph over Chelsea at Old Trafford – a clear indication of how significant this victory was for the team.

United seemed set to dominate the match in the first half on Saturday as they took advantage of the Blues’ weaknesses. Robert Sanchez was given his marching orders early on after he fouled Bryan Mbeumo outside his penalty area.

Bruno Fernandes swiftly capitalised on Chelsea’s misfortune before Casemiro doubled the lead before half-time. However, the tide turned when the Brazilian received his second yellow card, reducing United to 10 men.

After half-time, United’s mission shifted to maintaining their lead, which they managed effectively until Trevoh Chalobah’s header found the net with just 10 minutes remaining.

A tense finale followed, but the Red Devils held on, with Cunha – who came on for the final 25 minutes after returning from a minor hamstring issue – cleverly keeping possession near the corner flag.

When the final whistle blew, Cunha couldn’t contain his emotions. He kicked the ball into the crowd towards the Stretford End, shouting in jubilation at the home supporters before being engulfed by his team-mates.

Cunha’s outpouring of emotion could be attributed to the mounting pressure on the squad and especially on Ruben Amorim following last Sunday’s derby defeat to Manchester City.

Amorim had been under scrutiny regarding his tactics and future, and this win over the Blues will undoubtedly quieten some of his detractors.

Speaking after his side’s win against the Blues, Amorim said: “It is really important because I understand the situation around this club. We cannot forget that we suffer a lot when we are on top.

“We can lose against Grimsby, we can beat any team. I’m just thinking about the next one. It is really good to win. We need the urgency to win again, that is really important for us.”

“We suffered in the end but we deserved the win,” Amorim added. “Our crowd, our fans are easy to please. If you give everything, they will be there. That is something our players need to understand.

“To have the crowd with us, we just need to run, to fight and tackle. With this win, we have to forget the good feeling of winning the game and get back to the urgency of feeling we need to win the next game.”

The next challenge for United and Amorim is to capitalise on this victory and inch closer to the top four, with a journey to Brentford up next in the Saturday lunchtime fixture.
