Ernest Akushey, a 27-year-old boxer, tragically passed away just days after losing a boxing match in his home country of Ghana.

Akushey was defeated by Jacob Dickson in an eight-round bout in the capital city of Accra on September 12. However, according to local media reports, he began feeling unwell on Monday, September 22, 10 days post-fight.

His health quickly took a turn for the worse overnight, and sadly, Akushey died on Tuesday, September 23, 11 days after his defeat to Dickson. During the fight, Akushey had taken several blows to the head before being knocked down.

Following the tragic news of his death, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman released a statement which read: “The WBC mourns this irreparable loss and extends our deepest sympathies to Ernest’s family and many friends.”

One fan expressed their sorrow on Facebook, saying: “So sad. Heartfelt condolences and sympathy to his family and GBA. God console, comfort and strengthen them all and us all in this difficult period of mourning,” reports the Daily Star.

“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” another fan commented. A third added: “My sincere condolences to the family. Rest Well Bahubali.”

Another tribute read: “Man for the people. He brought so much attention to the boxing fraternity… loved by many and also a champion entertainer. God keep him safe till we all meet again.”

Akushey made his professional debut in 2019 and spent his entire career boxing out of Ghana. He had remained undefeated earlier this year until he was finally bested by Jonathan Tetteh in May.

Dickson also paid tribute to his rival, saying: “I’m deeply shaken and heartbroken to hear about the passing of Ernest Akushey (Bahubali).

“Though we stood on opposite sides, I always recognised your strength, your courage, and the fire in your spirit. We may have been opponents, but you earned my respect in every way that mattered.

“To know that you are no longer here… it feels unreal. It’s a heavy loss – not just to those who knew and loved you, but to everyone who ever witnessed your fight, your heart, your humanity.

“Life can be cruel in its timing. One moment we clash as rivals, the next we mourn as humans.”
