Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler were left red-faced after a podcast host mocked the world No. 1’s putting abilities ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup getting underway

Rory McIlroy was left in stitches when a podcast presenter savagely ridiculed Scottie Scheffler’s putting skills directly in front of the World No. 1. The Northern Irishman will spearhead Team Europe’s campaign when the Ryder Cup kicks off on Friday.

Europe’s aspirations will largely rest on the Masters champion’s shoulders, just as they will for Team USA legend and world No. 1 Scheffler. Prior to the golfing superstars heading to Bethpage Black, they participated in a video segment alongside Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood.

The quartet were engaged in a Ryder Cup twist on Mr and Mrs, where they answered questions before scribbling their responses on white cards.

Scheffler and Morikawa faced the question of which player they’d back with a 15ft putt to clinch the Ryder Cup. Following Scheffler’s response, he was caught completely off guard by a cutting remark from the presenter.

The host, Johnson Wagner, kicked things off on the TaylorMade Golf podcast by asking: “Your team has a 15ft putt to win the Ryder Cup. Who is taking it?” Scheffler responded: “It’s between us two? I think Collin’s going to be nice and say me.”

Without missing a beat, host Johnson Wagner fired back: “Okay. Really? As bad of a putter as you are?” Scheffler handled the jibe with good humour, joking that Morikawa wasn’t “not a smart guy.”

Following Wagner’s brutal comment, McIlroy was completely taken aback and couldn’t suppress his laughter and astonishment. In a twist of fate, Morikawa had predicted Scheffler would be the one to secure the winning putt, even going as far as to write his name on the card.

The host then turned to McIlroy, asking if he thought Fleetwood would take on the responsibility himself or pass it on to him.

The five-time major champion responded: “I would think similar to what Scotty said. I think my partner is going to be nice to me and choose me.”

Just like Scheffler, McIlroy’s prediction was spot on, as Fleetwood indeed selected the Masters champion to take the 15ft putt. Given the stellar year McIlroy has had, it’s no surprise Fleetwood backed the Holywood star to make what could be a historic putt.

Earlier this year, McIlroy ended over a decade of frustration on the golf course by clinching the Masters, showing incredible composure to beat Justin Rose in a thrilling play-off. His victory not only broke an 11-year major drought, but also completed his career Grand Slam.

Now, he’s gearing up for his sixth Ryder Cup, having participated in every edition of the competition since 2010. Reflecting on his time in the prestigious tournament, he said: “This is my seventh Ryder Cup.

“Am I going to play in another seven? I don’t know. I’m probably on the back nine of my Ryder Cup career, and every one that I get to play in from now on is very, very meaningful.”
