Harry Kane could make an emotional return to Tottenham in the summer after it was revealed the England captain has a £54million exit clause in his contract at Bayern Munich

Arsenal icon Ian Wright has weighed in on the speculation surrounding Harry Kane’s potential move to Tottenham from Bayern Munich – backing the striker to complete an emotional return.

Kane, 32, left his boyhood club for Germany in the summer of 2023 for a hefty £86million, but rumours are swirling that he could return to Spurs just two years later for a significantly reduced fee of just over £54m. An exit clause in Kane’s contract can be triggered if he expresses his desire to return to Tottenham in January.

Kane lifted his first career trophy last season as Bayern clinched the Bundesliga title, while Spurs celebrated their own victory in the Europa League final shortly after. Despite netting an impressive 280 goals in 435 appearances for Spurs, silverware eluded Kane.

Of those goals, 213 were scored in the Premier League, leaving him just 48 shy of surpassing Alan Shearer as the all-time top goal scorer in England’s top-flight. As speculation around Kane’s future intensifies, Wright has tipped the Three Lions captain to return to Spurs and break the record.

“Not just for the [Premier League] record but to finish off and see if he can be part of a team that wins something at Tottenham,” Wright said on the Overlap. “Obviously they won the Europa [League].

“But for him and his legacy to be at Tottenham and maybe win something and the end of it and then go on to maybe get the goals. I think if Harry Kane comes back next season, he’ll break that record I think.”

Spurs boss Thomas Frank has recently shared his thoughts on a potential transfer for Kane, praising the player’s performances at both Spurs and Bayern. “He is an unbelievable player who did fantastic for Spurs and is doing fantastic for Bayern,” said Frank.

“Top player. I think there’s a lot of Tottenham fans, including myself, who would like to see Kane back. Personally, I don’t think he will do it right now if I’m honest.

“He’ll probably stay in Bayern and continue performing well. He was top scorer last year, won the championship and he’s doing fantastic now.”

Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl also gave his view on a potential return to Spurs for Kane, saying: “I think that at his age he is still making huge progress as a personality on the pitch.

“At Tottenham, of course, we all knew him from scoring goals but I think the way he’s playing football in this team right now, not just scoring goals, but as a player, as a leader on the pitch and sacrificing himself for the team shows what I’ve been saying.

“He wants to win titles, that’s what hunger is. He can do that with us, we want to do that with him. He’s old enough to make his own decisions, whether he has a clause or not.

“If he says, ‘I want to make a decision’, as he showed at Tottenham, then he will make that decision. But of course, our wish is to have a very, very successful season with him and in the future.”
