Arsenal came from behind to beat Newcastle United at St. James’ Park with Gary Neville believing they have sent a ‘clear message’ to Liverpool in the Premier League title race

Gary Neville insists Arsenal could be the strongest side in the Premier League this season, despite Liverpool still sitting top of the pile. The Gunners staged a dramatic comeback to secure a last-gasp triumph at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Gabriel Magalhaes netted a sensational 96th-minute winner after Mikel Merino had cancelled out Nick Woltemade’s opener only minutes earlier. The triumph propelled Arsenal back into second place in the Premier League and reduced the gap to table-toppers Liverpool to merely two points.

Mikel Arteta’s side appeared destined to trail by five points before their stunning late revival, having seen the defending Premier League champions squander the chance to stretch their lead on Saturday following a dramatic stoppage-time defeat at Crystal Palace.

Neville was impressed by Arsenal’s transformation at St. James’ Park, occurring just seven days after they had surrendered ground to Arne Slot’s outfit following their 1-1 draw with Manchester City, who thumped Burnley 5-1 on Saturday.

After declaring that Liverpool and Arsenal are the only sides capable of winning the title this season, the Manchester United icon issued a stark warning to the Reds following the Gunners’ stunning victory.

“Mikel Arteta has got a brilliant squad,’ Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast. “He’s got a brilliant squad.

“I think he’s got the best squad in the league and maybe the best team in the league and I say that quietly because Liverpool are excellent.

“There’s only two teams who can win this league – Liverpool and Arsenal – I don’t think anyone else can.

“So I think it’s a big moment. It’s only September and it’s ridiculous to be speaking like this as someone who experienced title races.

“But what you’ve got to do is send out some calling cards and some clear messages that you’re there in the title race and I think that’s what Arsenal have done today.

“A week ago the glass was half empty, now it’s more than half full. Liverpool lose, Arsenal win in stunning fashion.

“They deserve it, they were the better football team. [Arteta] made really good subs, he started with a strong team. That will give them huge confidence.

“You shouldn’t have swing weekends this early. But the Liverpool players sitting at home watching this will perhaps sink slightly.”
