Liverpool saw a late penalty overturned by VAR review in their 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray

Liverpool were denied the chance to score another late goal in their 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray as they had a penalty overturned following VAR review. Ibrahima Konate was initially adjudged to have been fouled by Wilfried Singo in the box as the pair challenged for a high ball.

Referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot but was then advised to review his decision on the monitors by VAR Jerome Brisard. After watching the clash back, Turpin overruled his initial decision, with replays showing that Singo played the ball first before Konate made contact with his foot and then collapsed to the floor in pain.

But even before the officials ordered a VAR review, both Alan Shearer and Mark Clattenburg shared their opinion that the penalty decision should be overturned.

But even before the officials ordered a VAR review, both Alan Shearer and Mark Clattenburg shared their opinion that the penalty decision should be overturned.

“He (Singo) has connected with him (Konate),” Shearer said on co-commentary duties for Amazon Prime. “Does he get the ball first, there? Yes, he wins the ball, the defender.”

Clattenburg was then called in, with the former Premier League referee insisting that VAR should review the initial decision to award the penalty.

“Yeah, I think the defender gets the touch on the ball and I think this is where the VAR should do its job correctly by recommending a review,” he said. “Because once the defender wins it clearly like this, you see Konate actually makes contact with the bottom of the defender’s foot.

“Clearly, the defender wins the ball and I would love a recommendation here.”

Shearer added: “I can understand why the referee has given it from his view that he had.

“It looked like he did connect with him, follow through and not win the ball. But on review, that’s when VAR works very well.”

Liverpool lost 1-0 to Galatasaray after Victor Osimhen scored an early penalty for the Turks, with both Shearer and Clattenburg also in agreement that Turpin made the right decision awarding a spot-kick after penalising Dominik Szoboszlai.
