Ruben Amorim is under huge pressure as Manchester United manager after a dreadful start to the season and Jamie Carragher and Wayne Rooney agree on the next step for the club
Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carragher have both called on Manchester United to sack Ruben Amorim, having failed to see any signs of improvement. Amorim has won just 18 of his 49 matches in charge of United and is under huge pressure, with the club considering potential replacements.
After finishing 15th in the Premier League in 2024/25 and losing the Europa League final, things have continued in a disastrous fashion this season. United are 14th with two wins from six league games, having also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby.
The 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday means United still haven’t won back-to-back league games under Amorim, who has been in charge since November. The Portuguese boss’ tactical system is still not working and the attack continues to struggle, despite over £200million being spent on three forwards in the summer transfer window.
The tide has turned on Amorim, who arrived with a stellar reputation from his time with Sporting Lisbon, but has not convinced. Ahead of a crucial must-win match against newly-promoted Sunderland on Saturday, Carragher called for Amorim to be put out of his misery.

“This has been a disaster for Manchester United but also for Ruben Amorim,” he said on Sky’s Monday Night Football. “What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic. He looked like the next big thing as a manager, but bringing in a manager like that in, in terms of the system that he played, I don’t think really suited the traditions of Manchester United.
“The quicker Manchester United make the decision on the manager, I think it’s better for everybody because as I said, it’s been a disaster for the club, but also the manager. We’re only waiting for the inevitable. Unfortunately, as Duncan [Ferguson] said, you don’t want to see people lose their jobs, but his has to end as quickly as possible.”
Carragher does not have any skin in the game, having spent his career at rivals Liverpool. But Rooney is a United legend and measures his words carefully, partly due to having two sons in the club’s academy. He made a similar point after the Brentford game.
“I just don’t know what’s going on,” he said on The Wayne Rooney Show. “I have tried my hand in management and it didn’t work out too well, I get it. Ruben Amorim is my age, he is still a young manager and I’m sure he still has a massive future.
“But what’s going on at Man United – this is not Man United. I honestly hope he can turn it around and he does. But if you’re saying to me: ‘Do you believe he will?’ then, after everything I’ve seen, honestly, I’ve got no faith in it.
“I am not seeing anything which is giving me any confidence. There needs to be big changes in my opinion. Manager, players, whatever that is. Whatever it takes to get Manchester United back.”
The Sunderland game will be crucial for Amorim, who knows there is a two-week international break looming afterwards. Anything other than victory over the Black Cats at Old Trafford could signal the end of his spell in charge, with the break giving Ineos time to line up a replacement.
