Ryan Reynolds has been lifting Wrexham midfielder Andy Cannon’s spirits during his rehabilitation from an ACL injury, sending him funny videos as he targets a December return
Ryan Reynolds has shown his true colours by lifting the spirits of a Wrexham star who has been sidelined with a major injury. Midfielder Andy Cannon suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a League One clash against Mansfield Town in February.
The 29-year-old later underwent surgery and missed the end of Wrexham’s promotion-winning campaign in the second tier. The former Hull City player is still undergoing rehabilitation and has yet to feature for the Red Dragons in the Championship this term.
However, Cannon has now revealed how Wrexham co-owner Reynolds has been cheering him up by sending him funny video messages as he aims to return to full training by December. He disclosed how fellow owner Rob Mac was also quick to get in touch in the immediate aftermath of the frightening injury, which saw him given oxygen on the pitch before he was carried off on a stretcher.
Speaking to ex-Wrexham stars Ben Foster and Ben Tozer on ‘That Wrexham Podcast‘, Cannon said: “[They contacted me] right away. You know what they’re like after a game. If you have a good game, you score or you do well, there’s a message off them.
“As soon as I did it, there were messages from both the owners. A couple of weeks ago, Ryan was sending me videos, which is still a bit mad. They were just funny ones.

“He had his daughter on one of them, beeping her out and pretending she was swearing. It still looks a bit mad when you see Ryan Reynolds pop up on your phone.”
Cannon first joined Wrexham in December 2022 and has helped the club to achieve three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship. He signed a contract extension in August 2024, keeping him at the Racecourse until the end of the current season.
Discussing the moment he realised he was badly injured, Cannon said: “I think it’s the one which everyone dreads in football when you hear it’s your ACL. As soon as I heard a pop, I knew it was bad. I was on the floor just trying to straighten my leg because it was a bit bent on the floor and I couldn’t move at all.
“I genuinely thought my leg was facing the other way to be honest. I was running and the ball was coming towards me. As soon as it bounced, I landed heavily on my leg and I heard the pop.
“I was just like, ‘Oh, that felt a bit weird,’ and then the pain kicked in about ten seconds after. Adrenaline’s a funny thing. It can get you through so much, but I’d say about ten seconds after I was on the floor, that’s when everything started kicking in.”
The midfielder has struck up a close bond with several of his team-mates at Wrexham during his time with the club, including former Republic of Ireland international James McClean. Cannon explained how the former Premier League star let him stay at his house following the injury as he was afraid of his children witnessing the full extent of it.

Cannon said: “I didn’t want my kids to see me, so I was at Jimmy’s (James McLean’s) house. I stayed there for a couple of nights because I didn’t want my kids to be looking at me like, ‘why can’t he move?’ All of a sudden, when they’re telling you to play with them, you’re saying, ‘oh, I can’t play anymore,’ and then they get a bit confused.
“I stayed there and I found out the news [about the extent of the injury] when I was with Jimmy. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen Jimmy actually be nice to me on the day that I found out the news.”
He added: “I was bed-bound for two weeks. I couldn’t get out of bed and I couldn’t go to the toilet. It was just a mad time, but hopefully I’m in a very good place. I’m looking to be back in training around December time. You’ve got to look back and see how far you’ve come.”
