Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has come to Florian Wirtz’s defence and looked to reassure fans over the German international’s form after completing his move to Anfield

Jurgen Klopp has declared concerns over Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool form are being blown out of all proportion. The German star has seen a slow start to life in the Premier League since making his £116million move to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen.

Wirtz, 22, has yet to find the net in 10 matches for the Reds and dropped out of Arne Slot’s starting lineup for the first time against Chelsea before the international break. The summer signing’s progress has come under scrutiny from the likes of Jamie Carragher, having failed to hit the ground running, and there is a suggestion that he has impacted the team’s balance.

Ex-Liverpool boss Klopp has faith that Wirtz will be a success and pushed back at the scale of recent criticisms. “I don’t have to worry about Florian Wirtz because his quality is so outstanding,” he told RTL and n -tv.

“Of course, everything is fine, and everyone knows that. The discussion is certainly being blown out of proportion.”

Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer has told fans not to worry about ‘a once-in-a-century talent’ who will ‘show that in every game again, as he did at Leverkusen’. “If anyone’s worried—you don’t have to! You can stop,” he added.

The 58-year-old also claimed Anfield was the perfect place to come through this patch. Wirtz has “a stable environment at Liverpool, and the club is great in moments like these,” Klopp added.

But, following defeats to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea, Klopp conceded that Slot’s team are now in an unsual position. The ex-Borussia Dotmund coach is far from concerned however.

“Liverpool have just lost three games in a row – it’s unusual for something like that to happen after such a long time,” he said. “But it’s also normal in life. That’s why these things are discussed.

“I’ve been in the middle of such discussions long enough now, and I can tell you: Nothing could interest people less than the public discussions that are taking place there. So it doesn’t matter, and everything will be fine.”

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has also launched a firm defence over Wirtz’s performances.

“Even if he hasn’t scored a goal, he’s the player who creates the most chances in the Premier League,” the German told Sport 1. “It’s not his fault if his team-mate doesn’t create them, and the statistic isn’t even a third of the truth. He simply has to get used to the league.

“I’ve seen him feel completely liberated. He knows what he’s capable of and how things work. Not everything has always been handed to him – he’ll work hard now, too.”
