Kobbie Mainoo has been struggling for game time at Manchester United this season and the midfielder has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is keeping himself in tip-top shape during the October international break, despite struggling to secure a spot in Ruben Amorim’s plans at Old Trafford. The Stockport-born youngster has found it tough to compete with Bruno Fernandes for a starting XI position, which has limited his playing time.

Mainoo has been used in the advanced No.10 role, but the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have further complicated his chances of starting there. The 20-year-old’s lack of game time this season prompted him to request a loan move away from United.

With the World Cup looming at the end of the season, Mainoo needs regular playing time to be considered for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. However, Amorim turned down Mainoo’s request, insisting he is needed as part of his team.

Having not yet started a Premier League match for United this season, the issue of a transfer is likely to resurface when the January window opens. But if Mainoo is feeling frustrated at Old Trafford, he’s not letting it affect his professionalism.

During the October international break, Mainoo flew to Marbella to gear up for the return of the Premier League. While soaking up the Spanish sun, Mainoo has kept up his training both on the pitch and in the gym.

The midfielder also shared snaps of himself working out in the gym, captioning them ‘blessed’. It’s a sight that will surely please Amorim as he sees Mainoo maintaining his professional attitude.

Meanwhile, the midfielder is undoubtedly eager for his moment to shine sooner rather than later. United face off against Liverpool in their next Premier League match this Sunday afternoon.

Speaking last month, Amorim said: “I didn’t have a conversation with him before the window closed because I didn’t want Kobbie Mainoo thinking that I was having a conversation with him just to hold on to him. I did it this week.

“I believe in him a lot. He is a top player. But some of you think that Kobbie Mainoo is already done [a complete player]. I think he can do so much better.

“For some guys [talent] is enough, but for him it is not. Maybe it’s not fair, but I think I’m helping Kobbie and that’s it.”
