Roy Keane was asked about whether Manchester United are “back” after Ruben Amorim’s side earned a first win at Anfield for a decade in a 2-1 success against Liverpool

Roy Keane has disagreed with the theory that Manchester United are “back” after Sunday’s 2-1 win at Liverpool – but did admit that it was a “huge” result for Ruben Amorim and the Reds.

Looking to follow up a much-needed 2-0 success against Sunderland before the international break, United came fast out of the books and took an early lead at Anfield. Bryan Mbeumo put the Reds in front within two minutes, running in behind before slamming the ball past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Liverpool pegged United back and equalised in the second half through Cody Gakpo, but Amorim’s side responded and went back in front late on. Harry Maguire was the man that scored it, as he headed home a fine cross from Bruno Fernandes to secure United a second straight Premier League win.

When asked by Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates about whether United are back after back-to-back victories, Keane rubbished that thesis. “I wouldn’t go as far as to say Man Utd are back but it’s a huge win for them,” he said.

“We’ve all been critical of this group of players over the last year but on today’s performance, they showed grit. They stuck at it and you felt they had goals in them.

“It’s a big moment for these players and they should enjoy it. But now they have to kick on.”

Gary Neville then delivered his verdict on the game and the win for United. “What a moment for Ruben Amorim. He needed something, the pressure was building but a win at Anfield is huge,” he said post-match.

“It’s a great place for Manchester United to win a game of football. It’s a big period coming up, the manager is under pressure and they pulled something out of the bag and they have to make sure this is the start of something.”

The result has moved United up to ninth in the Premier League table on 13 points from their opening eight fixtures. They sit just two points behind Liverpool, who have now lost three in a row in the top flight, in fourth.

Bruno Fernandes gave his reaction to post-match and admitted it’s an “important” win for United. “It’s always good to win games,” the Portuguese told Sky Sports. “We know what this kind of games means for our club and fans and also for ourselves in the moment we are right now. It’s really important because we needed three points.

“We know what it means for the fans and for the club to play this kind of rivalry. It’s been a long time since the club won at Anfield. It’s very important and happy to do it today.”
