Matheus Cunha joined Manchester United in the summer and has impressed since his arrival, despite having been warned that he could be a ‘prickly’ character

Matheus Cunha has made a strong impression at Manchester United, despite club staff receiving a warning upon his transfer from Wolves. The Brazilian was instrumental in helping Vitor Pereira’s Wolves side steer clear of the Premier League relegation zone last season.

He was the first new face to arrive at Old Trafford during the summer transfer window. United activated a £62.5million release clause in his contract.

Cunha had a promising start to his United career, but missed the derby against Man City due to a hamstring injury. He has since played in four matches, notably impressing in last weekend’s 2-1 victory over rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

According to The Sun, his game management in the final 10 minutes of that match caught the attention of those at United. His ball retention and ability to push forward are also thought to be easing the pressure on captain Bruno Fernandes.

Despite initial warnings that Cunha could be a ‘prickly’ character, interactions with the summer signing have reportedly been ‘almost purely positive’. The striker is said to have formed a close bond with full-back Luke Shaw.

Although he has yet to score or assist in a United shirt, Cunha will be hoping to change that when United host Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Last season, the 26 year old netted 15 goals in the Premier League for Wolves and also provided six assists.

Cunha will also be keen to prove former Man City defender Joleon Lescott wrong after he criticised the signing. “They don’t need [a player like Cunha],” he told The Mixer, brought to you via Sky Bet.

“They’re trying to build, or probably rebuild now, by buying second-tier or third-tier players and creating the foundations that get you there.

“[Bryan] Mbeumo is more of a foundational piece to their puzzle than Cunha. They’re now a mid-table team, not a mid-table club, and Mbeumo needs to play.”
