Former Bournemouth star suffers horror neck break as club issues recovery update

Wes Fogden, who has more than 500 senior appearances across spells with clubs including Bournemouth, suffered a horrific injury which caused his team’s match to be abandoned

Former Bournemouth and Brighton midfielder Wes Fogden suffered two broken vertebrae in his neck while playing in the FA Trophy over the weekend. The 37-year-old’s club Dorchester Town were in action against Basingstoke Town when Fogden’s injury caused the match to be abandoned.

Dorchester issued an update on Fogden, a player-coach at the club, on Sunday. They also later confirmed their match, which was abandoned following the horror injury, would be replayed on Tuesday night.

“Our FA Trophy game at Basingstoke Town yesterday was abandoned following a serious injury to Magpies player/coach @wesfogden12 in the first half,” the non-league club said. “Wes was conscious and talking as he was taken in to the ambulance, and scans in hospital yesterday evening have confirmed two fractured vertebrae in his neck, which will require a number of weeks in a neck collar

“We will provide further updates on Wes’ condition when we are able to We would like to place on record our thanks to all Magpies and Basingstoke staff and players who helped look after Wes yesterday on the pitch before he was taken to hospital. From everyone at the club, we send our love and very best wishes to Wes for a full and speedy recovery.”

A number of football clubs and fans have shared messages of support for Fogden. “So sorry to hear this. Wishing you a very speedy and full recovery Wes,” wrote one, with another saying “Good luck Wes, the football family is with you”.

Fogden, a midfielder, began his career at Brighton and has made more than 500 career appearances for league and non-league clubs. He spent more than two years at Bournemouth, helping the club win promotion to the Championship under Eddie Howe, but had left by the time they climbed up to the Premier League.

“Wishing you all the best, Wes,” the Cherries wrote on social media. Some of his other clubs, including Yeovil Town and Poole Town, also shared messages of support.

Dorchester, who play in the Southern League Premier Division, entered the FA Trophy in the third qualifying round. They beat Bideford 4-0 to book their place in the first round proper, while Basingstoke got there by virtue of a narrow 2-1 victory over Shaftesbury.

Last year’s FA Trophy was won by Aldershot Town, who beat Spennymoor Town 3-0 in the final at Wembley. The Shots are due to enter the competition at the third round stage along with the other 23 teams in the National League Premier.
