Callum McGregor has opened up about the moment he found out Brendan Rodgers was leaving Celtic, insisting he was as in the dark as the supporters
Callum McGregor has spoken about the phone call where he found out Brendan Rodgers was leaving Celtic. The skipper admitted how “disappointed” he was with the shock departure.
McGregor, who has played under the Northern Irishman in both his spells in Scotland, chose not to reveal the contents of the call between himself and his former manager.
However, the former Scotland international admitted his shock at the sudden exit and his hopes for the future where people can realise the impact Rodgers had on the club. McGregor said: “I spoke to Brendan for 10 to 15 minutes after it.
“But what was said will stay private for obvious reasons. Number one was probably shock. I never saw it coming. I’ve been in football a long time and you like to think you can see these things coming.
“I was really close to the manager, everyone knows that, he was amazing for me throughout my career. He came back the second time and managed to deliver success from then as well, which only strengthened that bond.

“So it’s disappointing in the way everything ended. Very rarely in football do you get the fairytale ending. I’m hoping over time that everyone can see the good he did at the club.”
McGregor added that the team now has to put the departure out their minds and focus on Sunday’s upcoming clash against Rangers in the semi-final of the Premier Sports Cup. He said: “Now we have to move on, it’s a new chapter.
“Martin [O’Neill] and Shaun [Maloney] have come in, really good energy, really positive, reminding the players of how good they are. We had a really good result [against Falkirk], performance was good, and it takes us into probably the perfect game.”
