Manchester United went into gameweek 10 of the Premier League ahead of rivals Liverpool following a run of three straight wins, while Arne Slot’s side have lost four in a row

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted he won’t judge his side’s progress against Liverpool, despite overtaking their rivals. United went into the weekend one point better off than Liverpool, who are reeling after four straight Premier League defeats.

Amorim is enjoying the best spell of his United career, with three straight league wins coming as they head to Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon. United have seen off Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton in recent weeks, allowing Amorim some positivity as he reaches a year in charge.

By contrast, Liverpool are enduring their worst spell of the Arne Slot era, with six defeats in seven games across all competitions. Slot is under huge pressure going into their 8pm kick-off against Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

But speaking ahead of the Forest game, Amorim made his feelings clear on United’s bitter rivals. “I could not care less about being in front of Liverpool,” he told beinSPORTS.

“I know [the fans might care] but it’s not my way of seeing things, I just want to win every game and to finish top of the league. I want to be in the position to be champions of the Premier League, so I don’t care about the moment in the table.

“I remember people said I was naive to talk about winning the Premier League. The goal of this board, of the owners, the staff, is winning the Premier League, that doesn’t change. I don’t know how long it’s going to take.

“So we never change our narrative. We never change because we are winning now, we are going to change what we want to do. And when we were losing we said all of the same things. We want to win the Premier League, that is our goal. Let’s see how long it is going to take.”

Asked to reflect on a year in charge in his pre-match press conference, Amorim said: “It was a journey. A big journey. It was tough. It was really tough, good moments, bad moments. I learned a lot, that is really important.

“I found out that even in my lower moments, I can stick with the things I believe and that is a good thing for anyone, to understand that. Today, the answer is different from three weeks ago. So, it’s important to understand that. It’s one of the biggest honours of my life to be here and I want to continue here for many years.”
