Justin Rose helped Team Europe make history in September by winning the Ryder Cup on US soil and the Englishman was soon tipped to succeed Luke Donald as their captain

Justin Rose plans to officially withdraw from the running to be Team Europe’s captain at the next Ryder Cup. Rose, 45, is instead expected to focus on playing at his eighth Ryder Cup when the 2027 edition takes place at Adare Manor, Ireland.

The Englishman had delivered an emphatic ‘yes’ to the idea of one day becoming the European captain while soaking up September’s win against the USA. But Rose stressed that he’d only want to lead the team ‘if the time was right’.

A report from the Telegraph suggests that the Olympic gold medallist doesn’t believe that time is now. Rose has no plans to put down his clubs, having played a pivotal role in helping Team Europe to victory at Bethpage Black.

The recent Masters runner-up won two points from three matches and struck up a superb partnership with Tommy Fleetwood. Rose hopes to represent Team GB at the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, going for gold after his 2016 triumph in Rio.

His decision leaves DP World Tour officials with a headache. Team Europe’s stars publicly urged Luke Donald, who’s captained them to back-to-back Ryder Cup triumphs, for ‘two more years’ in the wake of their 15-13 victory on US soil.

But the 47-year-old has been tight-lipped on his future and insiders rate his chances ‘less than 50-50’, the report adds. Francesco Molinari would be the favourite if Donald steps aside and the Italian veteran could be part of an unprecedented captaincy double act with brother Edoardo.

Last month, Donald reiterated that he hasn’t yet made a call on whether he wants to captain Europe again. “I’m trying to still enjoy this one,” he joked to Sky Sports. “If I’m not a captain in two years’ time and the captain wants me to be there, then I’m sure I would be happy to help him in any way he wanted.”

Rose, like his team-mates, would like Donald to continue and told talkSPORT: “Luke has been absolutely phenomenal. He’s really given his heart and soul to this thing for four years now.

“He’s left a seriously strong blueprint and has actually made it very daunting for the next guy. The European legends of the game have always said, play, play, play, play as long as you can, because they’re the best days of your life.

“There’s time for vice captains, there’s time for captaincy. And when it’s the right time, if I’m ever asked, oh my God, yes please. But I love being in battle.

“It fires me up. It takes me to a place I didn’t know I could go. And I think after being a pro for 28 years, I’ve had to go places this week where I’ve never been before. It’s tested my resolve.

“I feel like I’ve never played in an environment like this before. So to feel like I’m learning as a player at 45 is incredible. And I think that I need to protect that as long as I can.”
