Newcastle United are gearing up to host Athletic Club at St James’ Park on Wednesday night as the Champions League makes a thrilling return.
The Magpies are battling to maintain their position in the top eight following two impressive victories over Benfica and Union Saint-Gilloise. Meanwhile, Athletic Club celebrated their first Champions League win in October with a 3-1 win against Qarabag.
Both Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund have already defeated the Spanish side, and Eddie Howe’s team will be keen to add another three points to their tally with a home victory. Both sides enter this showdown with a point to prove after Newcastle suffered a 3-1 defeat to West Ham and Athletic Club lost 3-2 to Real Sociedad last weekend.

Newcastle are currently dealing with a few fresh injury concerns. Kieran Trippier was absent from his team’s loss to West Ham due to illness and it remains uncertain whether the England international will be fit for Wednesday night’s squad.
Yoane Wissa, Tino Livramento and Harrison Ashby are all confirmed absentees, however, Lewis Hall made a return to the matchday squad on Sunday following a thigh injury. Anthony Gordon, who was substituted at halftime over the weekend due to a hip issue, is doubtful for the Champions League fixture.
On the other hand, Athletic Club are also grappling with their own injury woes. Manager Ernesto Valverde will be without Inaki Williams due to an abductor injury sustained during their last Champions League match with the 31-year-old striker not expected to make a comeback until 2026.
Williams joins a long list of absentees which includes: Maroan Sannadi, Benat Prados, Unai Egiluz and Inigo Lekue. Yeray Alvarez is also unavailable until February for Athletic although this is due to a doping ban rather than an injury.
