Jamie Carragher planned to be among the Borussia Dortmund fans in the away end at Manchester City but the club and UEFA blocked the pundit’s wish over safety concerns
Jamie Carragher was prevented from joining the Borussia Dortmund fans in the away end at the Etihad on Wednesday night after both Manchester City and UEFA intervened.
The two parties weren’t willing to let the pundit watch the game from the stands despite a request to do so from CBS Sports, the broadcaster he was working for.
City themselves are thought to have felt that having an ex-Liverpool player in the Dortmund end, cheering them on against one of the Reds’ rivals, could have been a safety issue. The Daily Mail claims that UEFA stepped in because the pundit’s media accreditation did not allow to him to swap the press area for the stands.
Back in 2024 Carragher famously spent a boozy night in Dortmund’s yellow wall during the Bundesliga side’s semi-final win over PSG. On Wednesday the 47-year-old was again back amongst the German fans prior to their match in Manchester.
He joined the away following as he marched with them from the city centre to the stadium. Carragher was handed a Dortmund scarf and joined in with some of the fans’ songs. He was given beers and at one point held a yellow flare in the air.

Another concern raised was the possibility of Carragher having to interview City players post-match when he’d just spent the evening cheering on their opposition. Despite being denied entry the pundit was in good spirits when interviewed by his CBS colleagues.
He said: “It’s been fantastic. We had a great walk in from Manchester city centre to the ground. They’re enjoying themselves, they’re looking forward to the game and a little bit worried about Erling Haaland. But they’ve got their own man up front in (Serhou) Guirassy who we think might be able to cause a problem or two. They’re in full flight and hopefully by the end of the game they’re going to really enjoy themselves and I might join them.”
Dortmund were ultimately outclassed in Manchester as Haaland again scored against his former side. The Norwegian got one of their four goals with Phil Foden taking centre stage. The playmaker looked back to his best with a stunning brace.
Waldemar Anton did score for the German side in front of their travelling fans, but his goal failed to inspire a comeback. Instead it was City’s Rayan Cherki who had the final word as he scored in stoppage time to round off a stellar night for Pep Guardiola’s men.
