“There was all kinds of press and all kinds of stuff, so we finally adopted because we couldn’t do it,” he continued. “It’s tough.”
As Maury explained, being an interracial couple also made things a little complicated for them.
“When we’re starting to adopt, Connie says to the lawyer that we hired, ‘So, we want a child who is half Chinese and half Jewish,'” he recalled. “And the lawyer says, ‘You won’t live long enough. Nobody comes up like that. It’s not gonna happen.'”
Despite the ups and downs, Maury—who shares daughters Susan Anne Povich, 62, and Amy Joyce Povich, 58, with ex-wife Phyllis Minkoff—and Connie, 79, are grateful they made the leap.
