Liverpool will hope that their win over Real Madrid is a sign that the Reds are beginning to get back on track. Arne Slot’s side ended their run of league defeats against Aston Villa at the weekend and followed it up with a statement win over Real Madrid in the Champions League.
The Reds appear to be turning a corner after a dreadful run of form and will have been relieved to see Mohamed Salah score in back-to-back league games. However, Liverpool could potentially be forced to deal without their talisman in the coming weeks as a possible dispute emerges.
Slot will be focused on ensuring Liverpool extend their win streak in a crucial game away at Manchester City on Sunday. Meanwhile, figures behind the scenes will be helping to formulate the club’s transfer plans.
Liverpool have already been linked with several players ahead of the January transfer window. However, the Reds are claimed to be in direct competition with rivals Manchester United over one particular target. Here, Mirror Football takes a closer look at some of the headlines surrounding Liverpool.
Mohamed Salah row
Mohamed Salah is reportedly set for key talks with Egypt boss Hossam Hassan during the upcoming international break later this month. The Liverpool forward could find himself caught up in another club vs country row, as Egypt are scheduled to hold a training camp ahead of games against the United Arab Emirates (December 6), Jordan (December 9) and Nigeria (December 14) in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations.

In the same timeframe, Liverpool are set to face Leeds away, followed by Inter Milan in the Champions League and a home game against Brighton. The Daily Mail reports that Salah would prefer to play for the Reds before joining the Egypt squad at a later date, ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.
A similar situation arose two years ago and Liverpool were able to keep hold of Salah. However, the 33-year-old will want to avoid any upset as Egypt and Liverpool need to agree on when he will be released for AFCON.
The tournament is being held in Morocco from December 21 to January 18. If it is agreed that he can join up with the squad after the Brighton game, Salah could realistically miss up to eight Liverpool matches in all competitions, should Egypt reach the final.
Liverpool in Man Utd transfer battle
Liverpool are reportedly in competition with Manchester United for Hertha Berlin starlet Kennet Eichhorn. The 16-year-old defensive midfielder is enjoying the start of his breakout season, making six starts in the German second tier.
German publication Bild has reported that Hertha have placed a £17million asking price on the teenager, who signed a new deal in the summer. However, Liverpool face plenty of competition for the youngster’s signature, including from United.
It is claimed that scouts from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG and many other clubs have been keeping tabs on Eichhorn. Despite his tender age, Eichhorn, who has been likened to Toni Kroos, is more than holding his own in Hertha’s midfield.
“He is an incredible, exceptional talent,” Hertha’s Fabian Reese said Eichhorn’s debut. “If he continues like this, all doors will be open to him. I have rarely seen anyone so talented at that age. He has a huge career ahead of him.”
Manager Stefan Leitl added: “I couldn’t care less whether he’s 16 or 17. He’s a huge talent for Hertha. In many of his actions, you could see what we might be seeing from him in the coming years. I’m completely convinced of his abilities; he did a great job.”
