Manchester United are in the midst of their best run of the Ruben Amorim era, going unbeaten in their last five, with new goalkeeper Senne Lammens proving a hit with Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Senne Lammens’ performances as “outstanding” and has talked up his future having established himself as the new Manchester United No 1.

The Belgian has recently come into the fold having been signed in the summer as an unknown quantity. The goalkeeper has been a problem position for United across several seasons with Andre Onana struggling to convince during his two-year stint.

He was, somewhat surprisingly, allowed to leave on loan and headed to Turkey in the summer. Altay Bayindir had been deputising but he failed to produce and, on deadline day, the club opted to bring in Lammens in an £18million deal from Royal Antwerp.

The Belgian made his debut against Sunderland, keeping a clean sheet, and also helped secure a memorable win over Liverpool with United in the midst of a five-game unbeaten run which has seen them climb the table.

Ferguson told Raceday RTV: “Well, they are, the signs… the manager has had some good signs. Particularly the goalkeeper has been outstanding, he’s only played three or four games and he’s looking really good.

“Of course, Mbeumo and Cunha, the new players from Wolves and Brentford, they’ve added to it. I hope the manager gets a bit of success because at United you need to have success. The signs are getting better. I think back-to-back wins is something teams like United should always expect. But having gone through a cycle where the improvement has to come by waiting and being patient, they are enjoying it now.”

Lammens had made just 52 appearances in the Belgian Pro League before his move to the Premier League, but Amorim has shown huge faith in the 23-year-old who has looked an assured presence at the back.

Ferguson himself could rely on two stellar goalkeepers during his trophy-laden stint. Peter Schmeichel proved to be an inspired signing when he arrived on English shores and Edwin van der Sar was the cornerstone of his success in the later years.

It was the Scot who signed David de Gea shortly before his retirement in 2013. The Spaniard was the team’s No 1 for more than a decade, winning a record four Player of the Year awards, but he was allowed to leave in 2023 when his contract came to an end with Onana bought in as his replacement.
