Nick Woltemade was signed as Alexander Isak’s replacement at Newcastle this summer after the striker’s move to Liverpool and the German forward has now spoken out on his switch

Newcastle star Nick Woltemade claims Alexander Isak piled even more pressure onto him but is ‘relieved’ to have matched expectations since moving to St James’ Park this summer.

The German forward was signed for £69million as a replacement for Isak – who eventually completed a record-breaking move to Liverpool. Woltemade certainly had big boots to fill, with Isak having netted 62 goals across three seasons at St James’ Park. Fortunately, the 23-year-old appears to be coping well, having scored six goals in his opening 14 appearances.

He admits that his fast start has eased the pressure, particularly after Isak’s controversial exit. Speaking to Bild, the 23-year-old said: “A huge relief.

“The whole Newcastle package had potential for tension, especially since I arrived on the last day. Then there was the transfer fee. The expectations placed on me, because Newcastle’s top striker, Alexander Isak, had left.

“The start to the season wasn’t ideal. There was definitely pressure. I was very glad when it subsided. I quickly realised in Newcastle that it was a good fit not only on a footballing level, but also on a personal one.”

Woltemade’s fee earned criticism following his move, particularly from the German press. Bayern Munich were interested in signing him but refused to match Newcastle’s package. But Woltemade claims that the cost of his signature is not something that he thinks too much about. He added: “I was confronted with it frequently.

“But I didn’t choose this situation. I’m the least responsible for the sums involved. Nevertheless, I was happy that Newcastle saw enough potential in me to pay that amount.

“For me personally, it makes no difference whether I go from Werder Bremen to Stuttgart on a free transfer or from Stuttgart to Newcastle for €75m.

“Even though I know that the fee means a few more pairs of eyes are on me. Although, in England, the issue of transfer fees is viewed much more calmly than in Germany. Within the team, the transfer fee isn’t a factor at all.”

Woltemade enjoyed a productive evening on his last outing for the German national team, scoring twice in a 2-0 win vs Luxembourg. He will be aiming to extend that form on Monday evening as Germany take on Slovakia in Leipzig.

The striker then has a chance to add to his impressive Newcastle record this coming weekend as the Magpies take on Manchester City at St James’ Park.
