Liverpool have a major decision to make over the future of defender Andrew Robertson and the Reds have now been sent a warning over letting him leave Anfield at the end of the season

Liverpool have been warned it will be a major loss if they let Andrew Robertson leave the club. The Scottish defender’s future at Anfield remains up in the air, with his contract up next summer.

Should Liverpool choose not to renew his deal, then he can leave for nothing at the end of the season. Robertson has revealed that he is ‘relaxed’ over the current situation and has accepted that this could be his final campaign with the club. But speaking on Robertson’s future, ex-Liverpool star Jason McAteer has suggested that while the club might let him leave, it would be a major misstep.

Speaking to AceOdds, McAteer said: “It is a funny one with Andy Robertson and Liverpool, really. I think from how he has served Liverpool in his career, I think it will more be a case of Liverpool giving him the option. They won`t stand in his way if he wants a move to Celtic.

“I am sure he will be offered a new deal, but obviously on different terms. Liverpool has come to the point where Man City were last season, where they have exhausted their team, really. Jurgen Klopp exhausted the team, but he had great success with Milner, Henderson, Lallana etc.

“When Milner left, I worried for Liverpool. A lot of football goes on in the dressing room and on the training ground. Leaders are few and far between. Leadership today is talked about in different ways. You can lead by example, lead vocally and in all different ways.”

He added: “Before… If it wasn`t Milner, it would be Henderson. If not him, it would be Lallana or someone else. So, to come back to Andy Robertson, is playing a lot right now, because Liverpool need him and his experience, but especially because of his leadership qualities. I think Andy Robertson is needed at Liverpool right now for a lot of different reasons.

“I think Liverpool lack that kind of leadership on the pitch. I know, certain people have been critical of Virgil van Dijk, and he does lead in a different way. He is still a big presence in the club and players look up to him.

“He is still one of the best players Liverpool have had. But at times, you can`t just look at him for leadership. You need two or three more players. Van Dijk is having a bit of a bad time and he needs to look after himself. That is human nature. How can he point fingers at someone else if he is not playing well himself? So, he then falls down the pecking order.”

Robertson, 31, signed for Liverpool from Hull in 2017. He has gone on to make 354 appearances for the club, helping them to two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and two League Cups.
