Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were in a playful mood discussing Liverpool and Manchester United’s Premier League campaigns on The Overlap this week, before Nottingham Forest’s win at Anfield
Gary Neville has told Jamie Carragher he could be “in trouble” this season following his earlier Premier League predictions. The Manchester United legend was joined by the Liverpool icon for the latest episode of The Overlap this week, where the pair discussed their respective clubs and recent form in the top flight.
When Carragher addressed Liverpool’s defensive issues during their chat, he emphasised how Arne Slot must sign a centre-back in January. That gave Neville the chance to ask whether failing to do so would allow United to finish above their fierce rivals come the end of the campaign, with Carra less than impressed with the cheeky dig.
He responded: “I don’t think so,” before turning the ribbing back on Neville. He continued: “You’re desperate for that aren’t you? He got ridiculed, didn’t he, for his predictions? So, I’m well aware every week he’s on the phone to people at Sky saying, ‘Well, what did Cara say in the predictions? What what did they say?'”

Neville then dismissed Carragher’s joke, responding: “Well, my predictions, as we’ve established in the first day, Monday Night Football are more accurate than yours over time. But I actually think this season you’re in a bit of trouble.”
In a lighthearted exchange, Carragher quipped: “I’m going to lose my job or something because I got my predictions wrong?” as the panel erupted in laughter. When Ian Wright asked what the pair were discussing, Neville explained: “Well, he had Liverpool winning the league.
“I had United in the top four, didn’t I? They could sneak into fifth. Do you reckon they could finish fifth? Get into the Champions League.”
Refusing to back down, Carragher responded: “I said they should finish in a Europa League position. No, they won’t finish fifth,” receiving a deadpan look from his long-standing Sky Sports co-pundit before they shared another chuckle.
It comes as Neville may have secured bragging rights over Carragher following Liverpool’s disastrous performance against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday.
Slot’s team endured a crushing 3-0 defeat on home turf, with goals from Murillo, Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White sealing the deal.
Consequently, the Reds now find themselves positioned below Manchester United in the table, with the Red Devils also holding a match in hand as they’re not scheduled to resume Premier League action until Monday night’s clash with Everton at Old Trafford.
Just goal difference separates United and Liverpool, who occupy 10th and 11th place respectively at present, though Ruben Amorim will be eager to establish breathing space over Slot’s squad when his side do battle with the Toffees next week.
United and Liverpool have experienced contrasting fortunes from their last five matches, with United going into their game against Everton undefeated in their last five, courtesy of victories over Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton, as well as draws with Nottingham Forest and Tottenham.
On the other hand, Liverpool have only managed a single win from their last five Premier League outings, suffering defeats to United, Brentford, Manchester City and Forest. Their sole victory from the period comes in the form of a 2-0 win over Aston Villa.
