England were left reeling as Travis Head put on a show-stopping performance, helping Australia secure the first victory in the Ashes. The middle-order batsman was promoted up the order, due to an injury to Usman Khawaja, with the hosts needing 205 to win after England were bowled out for 164 in their second innings.

Ben Stokes and his side staged an impressive fightback against Australia on day one, despite being bowled out by the hosts for just 172 on a pitch that favoured the batting side. The tourists faced immense pressure from the hosts at the Optus Stadium, but responded admirably ahead of today’s action.

Ben Stokes claimed a five-wicket haul to leave Australia 9-123 heading into this morning’s session. Nathan Lyon and Brendan Doggett added nine runs to the Aussies’ overnight total, before Brydon Carse dismissed the former, giving England a 40-run lead after both sides had batted.

Despite appearing to be in control heading into the lunch break, England suffered an almighty collapse, losing nine wickets for 99 in the afternoon session. A masterclass from Head saw Australia cruise to victory.

The 31-year-old scored a sensational 123 off 83 deliveries – including 16 fours and four sixes. While England’s bowlers shone in Australia’s first innings, they struggled to make an impact in the second dig;

England second innings player ratings – by Matty Hewitt

Zak Crawley – 1

Another disappointing display with the bat resulted in the first pair of his career. Another first over duck and a test match that he’ll be keen to forget.

Ben Duckett – 5

Formed a steady partnership with Ollie Pope after Crawley’s departure. Showcased several impressive strokes throughout his innings, but England’s performance faltered following his dismissal.

Ollie Pope – 5

Remained steady at the crease and scored the second highest number of runs in the second innings, yet he’ll be disappointed with his dismissal, which marked the start of a downward spiral.

Joe Root – 2

Managed to avoid a pair in his second innings, but failed to contribute a significant score. England are reliant on their star player if they hope to bring the urn home.

Harry Brook – 2

Performed admirably during England’s first innings, but was dismissed for a duck in their second when they needed some stability in the middle. That’s not his style.

Ben Stokes – 3

Struggled with the bat once again and couldn’t find a solution to break Travis Head’s resolve. Conceded 17 runs in one over.

Jamie Smith – 4

Kept well and scored 15 runs before being controversially dismissed.

Gus Atkinson – 5

Made a significant impact in England’s second innings with 37 from 32 balls including two sixes to relieve some pressure. Was England’s best bowler despite a disappointing overall performance.

Brydon Carse – 5

Like his fellow bowler, hit two massive sixes to swing the balance back in England’s favour late on with 20 runs from 20 deliveries. Managed to take the wicket of Jake Weatherald, but couldn’t add to it.

Jofra Archer – 3

His pace significantly decreased from his first innings with the ball. Failed to bowl any maidens or take any wickets and proved costly.

Mark Wood – 3

He struggled to find his rhythm and didn’t look as threatening as usual.
