Arsenal underlined their title credentials by easing past North London rivals Tottenham on Sunday but Jamie Carragher has one major concern for the Gunners as they aim to end their long drought
Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal could actually be their own worst enemies as they aim to win the Premier League title. The Gunners are overwhelming favourites to claim the crown come the end of the campaign.
Mikel Arteta’s side moved six points clear at the top of the table by dismantling North London rivals Tottenham 4-1 at the Emirates on Sunday. Coupled with Manchester City slipping up against Newcastle, it leaves Arsenal in an excellent position heading into a busy festive period.
Despite their advantage, former Liverpool star Carragher believes the only team that can deny Arsenal is themselves. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “The only team that can stop Arsenal winning the league is Arsenal; they are the best team. They are the best squad.
“The only thing that can stop them is their own heads, their own mentality. Maybe this crowd getting nervous in March and April, if the league is still up for grabs by then.
“This would be the one. If they didn’t win it, I think we’d all point the finger at them and say, ‘You threw this away’. I don’t think that’s ever been the case before.

“I always think the case has been that there has been a team slightly better than them in the Premier League, but that is definitely not the case this season.”
Arsenal have of course been in this position before. The Gunners have challenged for the title in each of the last three campaigns but have fallen short on each occasion.
And Arteta is wary of getting too excited at this stage, particularly with so much football still to be played. Asked what being six points clear at this point of the season means, he replied: “In this league? Not much.

“We are doing really well. We’ve been really consistent and that’s it. I mean, when you look at the results, whether they win or lose, the difference in the scoreline and actually what happens in games is really small.”
Arsenal will be aiming to continue their push for the title against one of their nearest rivals next weekend. The North London side take on second-placed Chelsea in their next league outing, with a win being enough to see them move nine points clear.
