Arne Slot won the Premier League title last season because of the side he inherited – but he is getting found out this time round and Liverpool owners have to act
Some people believe Liverpool sacking Arne Slot would be madness. On the grounds that he won the Premier League title last season, and was allowed to spend almost £500m on new signings in the summer.
But these are precisely two of the many reasons why Liverpool’s owners should now be considering a managerial change. Because it is becoming abundantly clear that Slot is out of his depth as Liverpool boss. He has no answers to the problems engulfing him and his team – and allowing this to continue would be the real madness.
A team which is a reflection of him. Unlike last season, when the side which cantered to the league title was one which still had Jurgen Klopp’s fingerprints all over it. Slot just tweaked it here and there, while taking advantage of Manchester City’s dramatic collapse and Arsenal’s inability to last the distance.

But fast forward 12 months and this current side now includes Slot’s significant signings and supposed tactics – and is in the middle of a crisis which has infected all aspects of the club’s season.
Liverpool have capitulated. Plain and simple. Nine defeats in 12 games isn’t a blip, or loss of form. It is proof that whatever Slot tries, it doesn’t work. The run of results is Liverpool’s worst one since the 1953-54 season.
And Liverpool aren’t just losing games, they are being spanked on a regular basis. Slot’s flops have lost their last three games by an aggregate of 10-1. Stunned supporters are booing them off the pitch. Well, those who are still inside Anfield at the final whistle are, anyway.
Leaders like Virgil Van Dijk, Mo Salah and Alexis Mac Allister have morphed into bang average footballers, who appear to be lacking in motivation.
Florian Wirtz cost £116m, but doesn’t have the physical strength to cope with the demands of English football. British-record signing Alexander Isak has scored just once in 10 games, and this came in a League Cup win over Championship side Southampton. While Milos Kerkez continues to resemble a rabbit in the headlights.
Just seven months ago this very week, Liverpool won the title with a five goal thrashing of Tottenham. A title Liverpool have now handed to someone else, having raised the white flag before the start of December.
Christmas is still almost a month away, but Slot resembles a turkey getting perpetually stuffed. The Dutchman admits to being ‘almost confused’ by the malaise marauding through his side. But he needn’t use the word ‘almost’. When games turn against him, Slot is incapable of influencing them from the sideline, or rousing his players into a response.
And this fact, more than the results, performances or reaction of supporters, is the most damning of all when it comes to Slot.
Football will always be a results driven business. That’s the be all and end all – and whatever has happened in the past should not mask Slot’s humiliating failings. Emotion shouldn’t cloud the thinking of Liverpool’s American owners. Let’s not forget, Liverpool were far from convincing when winning games at the start of the season.
Concerns were clear back then, but four months on Slot has been unable to provide answers. This isn’t rocket science. Slot is the problem, not the solution. So Fenway Sports Group need to find a manager who is.
