Newcastle have been without summer signing Yoane Wissa ever since he arrived but his wages have been paid by FIFA since the first week of October after his injury on international duty
Newcastle have been without their summer signing Yoane Wissa ever since they signed him but the Magpies have seen FIFA pick up his wages for the last seven weeks.
Wissa moved to St James’ Park for £55million after impressing at Brentford, but is yet to play for his new side. The striker, who scored 20 times last season for the Bees, damaged his posterior cruciate ligament just a week after joining Newcastle whilst playing for DR Congo.
Until he makes his debut his wages will be taken care of by FIFA’s Club Protection Programme (CPP). The insurance scheme covers wages for players who are injured playing for their country and are then unavailable for more than 28 consecutive days. This scheme has been paying Wissa’s wages since October 7, reports the Daily Mail.
The striker is closing in on a return to full fitness and this week has been training alongside his team-mates for the first time. His road to recovery has not been smooth and seeing him on the training ground has provided a much needed boost for all those concerned.
Newcastle will not rush Wissa’s return though and want to ensure he is primed when he does eventually making his first appearance. As a result his current programme is similar to what a player would go through during pre-season.

Wissa was part of Newcastle’s late summer spend, although he had been on their radar for much of the window. He pushed for a Brentford exit and got his wish on deadline day with the Magpies needing to fill the void that was left by Alexander Isak’s British-record switch to Liverpool.
Eddie Howe lost his leading light but eventually landed some much needed firepower when he bought in Wissa, who arrived shortly after Nick Woltemade joined from Stuttgart. The German has impressed since heading to St James’ Park, scoring six times to lead the goal tally in the north east.
Newcastle could yet see Wissa depart for another prolonged period with DR Congo eyeing him for their Africa Cup of Nations campaign, which begins in mid-December. Depending on his country’s success Wissa could find himself missing for a month at a time of the season when the games come thick and fast.
The Magpies have endured a mixed campaign following a summer of uncertainty. They sit 14th in the Premier League, but underlined their quality with a win over Manchester City at the weekend. Their away form has been an issue and they were beaten in midweek at Marseille, but they have won three of their five games and hold genuine hopes of qualification to the knockouts.
