Jurgen Klopp’s name continues to be linked with the Liverpool manager’s job following the team’s alarming downturn under Arne Slot
Emile Heskey has told Liverpool how a sensational return for Jurgen Klopp could become a reality. After leading the Reds to every domestic trophy and a Champions League crown, Klopp resigned in 2024 after nine years at the helm, saying he had no intention of returning to English football.
However, in a recent interview, the German said a return to Anfield was “theoretically possible.” Klopp is currently the head of global soccer for the Red Bull group and serves in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
In an interview on The Diary of a CEO podcast, he said: “I said I will never coach another team, a different team, in England. So that means if then it’s Liverpool, yeah, theoretically it’s possible.”
With the champions in the midst of a full-blown crisis, having lost nine of their last 12 games and slumping into the bottom half of the Premier League, pressure is mounting on Arne Slot, who lavished almost £500million on new signings after sweeping to the title in his first season in charge.
There’s no doubt many Liverpool fans would welcome Klopp back with open arms should the club’s owners decide to make a change in the dugout, although they are believed to be behind Slot for now. Former Reds striker Heskey reckons Klopp could be drawn back to Anfield for a revival job similar to the one he initiated a decade ago.

He told 10bet Casino last month: “For a manager who did what he [Klopp] did for Liverpool, it will be difficult for him watching them in this form.
“To pull them out of the mess they were in, and then to leave them in the position that he did, Klopp will always be linked with a return, especially when he’s left the door open.
“It’s an interesting one, isn’t it? If you’re a Liverpool fan, you will always feel allied to him and you will always want him back to emulate what he did before, but how often does that happen?”
Football is littered with successful managers who have returned to club where they enjoyed immense success. Liverpool only have to look across Stanley Park, where David Moyes is leading an Everton resurgence. But Heskey said: “The expectation would be totally different at Liverpool [compared to Everton] and it’s rare that anything on that level could be repeated if Jurgen even came back in.
“There’s [Jose] Mourinho at Chelsea, so it can be done, but it’s few and far between when managers return to their former clubs and pick up as if they never left. If it could be done, I’m guessing that Jurgen could be the one to do it, although I definitely don’t want Slot to go yet.”
Pressed on what circumstances would have to unfold to draw him back to the dugout, Klopp said: “I don’t even know exactly, I love what I do right now.
“I don’t miss coaching; I don’t miss standing in the rain for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to press conferences four times, three times a week or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room as a dressing room, but sitting in a restaurant with the players having a nice chat, that’s nice. We won a lot of games so there was often a very good mood in the building. I still have Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh in my ear for example.”
