Manchester United fought to claim a point in Monday evening’s crazy clash with Bournemouth and despite it doing the Red Devils little favours when it comes to the table, Ruben Amorim’s side were still roundly praised

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both praised Manchester United’s approach in their chaotic draw with Bournemouth. The Red Devils were restricted to just a point against the Cherries, despite an impressive display at Old Trafford.

Amad had given Ruben Amorim’s side the lead, with Antoine Semenyo and Casemiro finding the net before the break. Evanilson equalised shortly after half-time, while Marcus Tavernier turned the game on its head for Bournemouth.

But United rallied once again and thought they had sealed victory through Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes, only for Eli Junior Kroupi to level matters late on. Despite the obvious defensive deficiencies, United icon Neville praised his former side’s approach.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “Absolute madness. End-to-end. Punch for punch, especially the second half. It’s a game that you could not call. I’m not sure who’s going to be happiest at the end.

“I said partway through that game, I could live with how Manchester United played through that game but you can’t get away from it’s seven points dropped from their last three games at home.”

Sky Sports colleague Carragher was also full of praise and claimed it was actually a positive performance from the Red Devils. He said: “I think we’ve just seen the best game of the Premier League season so far and that’s what makes the Premier League the greatest league, greatest product, whatever you want to call it, in the world.

“The majority of that game, Manchester United were absolutely fantastic. Bournemouth were not at the races at all in the first half, but they were fantastic in the second. What a game. Brilliant.”

Asked why his side were unable to see the win over the line, United boss Amorim bemoaned their defensive issues. He said: “We are lacking quality when we defend our goal.

“It’s something we need to address. It is different when you suffer so many goals and the opponent does not have what we create. I think we have talent at the back and quality players, we just have to be better at defending. We took care of the offence. We have the characteristics, we just need to work together.”

Monday’s draw with Bournemouth leaves United sixth in the Premier League, albeit just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. The Red Devils are back in action on Sunday evening as they travel to Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth sit 13th having rallied to claim a point at Old Trafford. Andoni Iraola’s men next welcome Burnley to the Vitality Stadium this coming weekend for their final pre-Christmas fixture.
