Liverpool spent heavily under Arne Slot in the summer with almost £400m being spent by the Reds but it appears another lucrative outlay is not on the cards in January
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has said that the Reds do not have ‘unlimited money’ ahead of the January transfer window. The Merseysiders spent heavily in the summer, with £400m being splashed by club chiefs.
Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were expensive arrivals, while Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni were all signed. But that outlay has not done Liverpool any favours.
Slot’s side have endured a woeful season, having lost six of their opening 16 games, leaving them seventh in the Premier League table. Speaking ahead of Saturday evening’s clash with Tottenham, the Dutchman hinted that it could be a relatively quiet January transfer window.
“The outside world wants to believe we have unlimited money but that is not true,” Slot said. “You insiders know – and you are the only ones because the outside world only talks about our spending – what we have brought in (money) to spend.

“That is the way we work over here. You then have to accept that in certain games during a season, you are short of a right full back.
“But we are still able to win. I fully believe in that way of working, by the way.”
One addition that Liverpool could potentially look to make in the winter window is a new centre-back. The Reds were close to signing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi in the summer, only to see the Eagles pull the plug on the deal late on.

Liverpool’s need has grown since, with Leoni and Joe Gomez struggling with injuries. Asked about a potential defensive addition, Slot had an intriguing answer.
He said: “The injury of Giovanni has quite a lot of impact. If you have four centre backs for the season, two right and two left backs with Wata (Endo) and Ryan (Gravenberch) who can help you out, but then you have an ACL injury, that is not very helpful. It is tough.
“And unfortunately Joe (Gomez) is now out of the squad again tomorrow. In a season, these moments for most teams happen. Some teams have so many (options) but most other teams do not. This is our way of working at Liverpool.”
Liverpool have just two weeks left to get their plans for the January transfer window in order. The window opens on January 1, 2026 and is set to run until Monday, February 2. Before that, Slot’s side will be keen to rise up the table, with games against Tottenham, Wolves and Leeds set to come.
