Anthony Joshua, the former two-time heavyweight boxing champion, was under “observation” in hospital while recovering from minor injuries suffered in the crash in Nigeria

Boxing legend Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital.

The former two-time heavyweight champ had spent days under “observation” for minor injuries sustained in the crash, which killed two of his close friends. However, the regional governments of Lagos and Ogun states say Joshua, 36, was last night well enough to continue his recovery at his home in the country.

The athlete was travelling in the back of a black SUV when it hit a stationary truck on a major road near Lagos, killing his pals Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Joshua and his mother paid their respects to them at a funeral home on Wednesday afternoon ahead of their repatriation to the UK, the statement added.

The statement, posted on X, read: “Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon though heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends he was deemed clinical fit to recuperate from home.”

The post also expressed gratitude for the team of doctors and medical staff at the Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi that attended to Joshua and those that sustained injuries. It read: “The quality of care and professionalism is truly commendable.”

The development comes after Nigerian police launched a search for the driver of the lorry involved in the smash that saw Joshua injured and his friends killed.

While the search is underway for the driver, officers have managed to locate the vehicle involved. The wrecked HGV is being held at Sagamu car pound, having been towed to the site, as per the Daily Mail. The soya bean truck is registered to a firm in Lagos and shows serious signs of damage, while there is also police tape clearly visible.

Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, was on holiday in Nigeria following his win over Jake Paul in Miami, Florida, on 19 December. He was involved in the crash, but escaped with minor injuries, police said.

Police have also revealed that the truck was parked illegally ahead of the crash. “He was parked on the side of the highway which is illegal, he had not broken down and he was not with the vehicle when the accident happened,” a Nigerian police officer said.

The search for the driver of the truck comes after the driver of Joshua’s car was also discharged from hospital. It has been suggested that he could face prosecution for reckless driving.

“Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from the hospital, and he is currently giving his statement,” a spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, told reporters.
