Ally McCoist was left stunned by Dominik Szoboszlai’s mistake that led to Liverpool conceding a goal against Barnsley in the FA Cup. The Reds were facing the League One club in the third-round tie at Anfield on Monday night as they looked to book a place in the fourth round of the competition.

Szoboszlai had put Liverpool into an early lead thanks to a long-range strike in the opening 10 minutes. Jeremy Frimpong then put Liverpool 2-0 in front with a strike in the 36th minute, but drama would then unfold at Anfield as Barnsley got on the score sheet.

Liverpool were passing the ball in their own half with Szoboszlai having possession in his own six-yard box. He seemingly attempted a backheel which ended up falling to Barnsley midfielder Adam Phillips, who got the visitors on the score sheet from close range.

McCoist was on commentary duty for TNT Sports’ coverage of Liverpool’s clash with Barnsley and was left stunned by the mistake from Szoboszlai. “He does fantastically well matching the run,” McCoist said. “Defensively, his duties were all but done as he got in front of the attacker?

“Does he stand on the ball? Try and backheel it? What on earth is he thinking about there?! That’s incredible, absolutely incredible.

“He scored a fantastic goal earlier but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player of that quality do something like that in an area where you should never even be thinking about it. I’m stunned at that.”

“For 40 minutes he might have been the best player on the pitch then he does something like that! I can’t believe what I’ve seen there.”

Liverpool went into the half-time break with a 2-1 advantage but had struggled to test Barnsley goalkeeper Murphy Cooper for the majority of the game, with the exception of the goals from Szoboszlai and Frimpong. Arne Slot’s side went into the game against Barnsley on the back of a goalless draw with Arsenal in the Premier League last week, a result which kept them in fourth place in the league table.

Liverpool went on to claim a 4-1 victory over Barnsley with Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike on the score sheet late in the second half to send the Reds through to the next round.

The victory over Barnsley has seen Liverpool earn a spot in the fourth round, where they will take on Brighton after their 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday evening.
