Harry Kane has been in fine form for Bayern Munich again this term but Dietmar Hamann is not completely happy with the England captain’s role in Vincent Kompany’s team
Dietmar Hamann has questioned whether the Bayern Munich head coach, Vincent Kompany, is happy to see Harry Kane popping up in deeper positions, claiming such a move is ‘not acceptable’ given the England captain’s prowess in front of goal.
Kane, 32, is in the midst of another fine campaign for the German giants, notching 31 goals in 27 games this term. His red-hot form has played a major role in Bayern’s imperious form in the Bundesliga, with Vincent Kompany’s side yet to taste defeat in the league this season and well on course to retain their domestic crown.
However, not everybody is satisfied with Kane’s penchant for dropping deep and Hamann, the former Bayern and Liverpool midfielder, is less than impressed at the fact that Bayern’s most prolific marksman is, in his eyes, not being used ‘exclusively as a striker’.

In his Sky Sports Germany column, Hamann wrote: “I don’t know if Kompany is happy that Harry Kane is no longer playing exclusively as a striker.
“It’s commendable that Kane sacrifices himself for the team, but as a coach, I want my striker where he’s effective and scores goals. In the long run – even though he’s currently doing very well in all areas – it’s not acceptable to me that Kane is winning balls in his own penalty area, because that’s not his job at all.”
Hamann went on to point out that in his two previous seasons in Germany, Kane’s returns in the second half of the campaign waned; last term he scored 10 times in 26 games after the midway point.
And Hamann wants to see Kane focus on his work in the attacking penalty box rather than his own. He continued: “He rarely gets into scoring positions at the moment; this was also the case before Christmas. In the past two seasons, he has scored significantly fewer goals in the second half of the season.
“The question is whether Bayern can develop the necessary attacking power in the Champions League that they will need against better teams. I’m curious to see what happens with Kane.”
