Manchester United’s search for a permanent replacement for Ruben Amorim will continue after the appointment of Michael Carrick as the club’s interim head coach.

Manchester United would be happy to appoint a World Cup manager as their next permanent head coach. Newly appointed interim head coach, Michael Carrick, began his second temporary spell with a 2-0 victory vs Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime.

However, United are in the process of considering who their next permanent head coach will be, having sacked Ruben Amorim at the start of the month. They have already been linked with Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann and England’s Thomas Tuchel, while Mauricio Pochettino – who is now in charge of the USA – is also claimed to be in the mix.

However, all four will not be available until after the World Cup which ends on July 19. Nevertheless, according to reports, United are happy to wait until after the competition in the USA, Canada and Mexico to appoint their next permanent head coach at Old Trafford.

The Telegraph reports that United may be willing to wait until after the World Cup to make an appointment with the four not ‘discounted’ for the role. It is, however, mentioned that current and former Premier League managers Oliver Glasner, Marco Silva, Andoni Iraola and Roberto De Zerbi could also be in the running.

It adds that the club have already made a decision on a key factor that will help them make the final call. The new permanent head coach will be selected on his ability to deal with all pressure which comes with managing United.

The next appointment is, therefore, likely to be ‘someone very different to Amorim’. The Portuguese head coach was dismissed after an explosive press conference following the 1-1 draw with Leeds earlier this month.

Amorim was said to be unhappy with ‘micro-managing’ from technical director, Jason Wilcox, with tension said to be there between the two. But it seems the new head coach will be given the same power as Amorim had.

It means that there will be collaboration between the new head coach and key figures in a department led by Wilcox over certain decisions at the club. Co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers will also have a say on the decision-making.

However, the result against United suggests the club are in safe hands under Carrick, at least for now. Bryan Mbeumo finished off a classic counter-attack just after the hour mark to send Old Trafford wild.

United could have won the game earlier had it not been for some great goalkeeping from City shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian’s resistance was eventually broken down on the 76th minute when Patrick Dorgu slid in to convert Matheus Cunha’s low cross into the far corner.

The win over City and Liverpool’s surprising draw against Burnley means United are now just one point from the top-four positions.
