Ex-Manchester United star Jesse Lingard is currently a free agent after being released by South Korean club Seoul, having spent almost two years in the K League

Free agent Jesse Lingard has emerged as a target for Feyenoord, where ex-team-mate Robin van Persie is in charge. Lingard, 33, is searching for his next club after being released South Korean club Seoul upon the expiry of his contract in December.

The former Manchester United star had spent nearly two years in the K League and made 67 appearances for Seoul, scoring 19 goals and providing 10 assists. Now Lingard is moving on to pastures new.

During the January transfer window, the 32-time England international held talks with several clubs in England and Italy. But Dutch giants Feyenoord have entered the fray following a devastating injury blow.

According to the Mail, Van Persie is keen to reunuite with Lingard. It comes after Feyenoord youngster and Van Persie’s son, Shaqueel, suffered what appeared to be a serious injury a week ago.

“It’s not looking good,” Van Persie admitted after Feyenoord’s 2-1 loss away to Real Betis in the Europa League. “Tests have to point out how he’s doing, but the first signs are not looking good.

“You hold your heart when any player goes down with an injury. It happened to be Shaqueel today, that’s just how it is. You hope for the best, but when you hear the first signs that it isn’t it’s heartbreaking.

“I’m a coach, but I’m also his father and I find this terrible. It’s a bit of both. It’s heartbreaking that he’s going through this.”

Lingard was breaking into the United first-team while Van Persie was winding down his Old Trafford career around 2014. Although the pair never played alongside each other in a competitive match, they did train together and more than a decade later could be reunited in Rotterdam.

The report adds that Lingard wants to make a decision on his next club by the end of next week. The midfielder most recently played in Europe with Nottingham Forest in the 2022-23 season.

Forest was Lingard’s first permanent club following his release from United, having not been offered a new deal. In 2021, he enjoyed a memorable loan spell with West Ham, who’ve also been linked with a move.

Back in his hometown of Warrington, Lingard recently told the Guardian that he’s ‘open’ to a range of countries for his next move. “Europe, Saudi, UAE,” he noted.
