Manchester City winger Jack Grealish has undergone surgery on a stress fracture in his foot, bringing an end to his loan spell with Everton in the 2025/26 season

Jack Grealish has confirmed that his season is over after he underwent surgery on a foot injury. Grealish suffered a stress fracture in his foot on January 18 and is “gutted” that his campaign has been brought to an abrupt ending.

The 30-year-old winger joined Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City and had impressed, returning two goals and six assists in 22 appearances. But an injury in a 1-0 win over Aston Villa last month has handed him a cruel blow.

Posting a photo of him in a hospital bed, Grealish wrote: “Didn’t want the season to end like this but that’s football, gutted. Surgery done and now all focus on getting back fit. I know for sure I will come back fitter, stronger and better than before.

“The support I’ve had since coming to this unbelievable club has meant the world to me. The staff, my teammates and especially the fans have been incredible and I absolutely love representing this club.

“I’ll be backing the lads all the way and doing everything I can to get back as soon as possible. Thank you again for all the love, it means so much.”

He received a torrent of support from the world of football, with City star Erling Haaland, Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, Everton’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and England stars Declan Rice and Morgan Rogers among those to wish him well.

Among the others to send him messages were Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie, Burnley’s Kyle Walker, Tottenham’s James Maddison – who has experience of such setbacks, having undergone surgery himself earlier this season – Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Brentford’s Jordan Henderson.

Grealish left City in search of more regular game time this season, with an eye on earning a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, having not played for the Three Lions since October 2024 under Lee Carsley. He showed flashes of his old self at Everton, whose fans have taken him to heart, but has seen his season cut short.

“It’s really disappointing for the player, and for the club, and all of us here,” Everton manager David Moyes said last month. “He’s such an important part, he’s a big character, big experience for us. We’ll miss him. He’s done a lot of really good things for us.”

Speaking earlier in the season, Grealish explained why he was drawn to join Everton in the summer. “People were saying to me, ‘what are you doing going to Everton’, and I was like, ‘what do you mean?’. It’s a massive club. I’m at my best when I feel loved,” he said.

“You know I’m quite vulnerable off the pitch and I wanted to go somewhere to just feel the love again and just wake up with a smile on my face and want to play again.”

Grealish is under contract with City – who he joined for £100m from Aston Villa in 2021 – until June 2027.
