Jamie Carragher criticised Dominik Szoboszlai after the Liverpool midfielder was sent off for a challenge on Erling Haaland during the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield

Jamie Carragher has slammed Dominik Szoboszlai for the red card he received during Liverpool’s loss to Manchester City. The Reds suffered a 2-1 defeat at Anfield in Sunday afternoon’s Premier League clash, dealing a significant blow to their Champions League qualification ambitions.

Szoboszlai put Liverpool ahead in the 74th minute at Anfield, but the reigning champions struck back twice in the dying moments through Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland, with the latter converting from the penalty spot.

The excitement didn’t stop there, as Szoboszlai was subsequently dismissed for fouling Haaland – pulling back the City striker just as the ball crossed the line.

Referee Craig Pawson originally awarded the goal but VAR stepped in and ruled it out, with Szoboszlai then receiving his marching orders for the incident involving Haaland.

Szoboszlai will now serve a ban following his dismissal against City, leaving Arne Slot with even more limited squad options as Liverpool prepare for Wednesday night’s fixture against Sunderland, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Carragher, a Liverpool icon, was working as a pundit during Liverpool’s defeat to City and didn’t hold back in his criticism of Szoboszlai for the tackle that earned him a red card, meaning the Hungary international will miss at least one fixture.

“It’s a stupid decision by Szoboszlai,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “For me you just let it carry on and the goal goes in and I don’t think anyone’s complaining.

“It’s absolutely daft from him because he’s got time to think, he was running back.”

Haaland also weighed in on Szoboszlai’s red card, suggesting that a third goal for City without a sending off for the Liverpool midfielder would have been a preferable outcome.

“Of course, the referee had to follow the rules, but this will give him three games – in the end I feel bad for him because he gets three games [sic],” Haaland said.

“Just give the goal, don’t give a red card. Simple as that. It’s the rules and how it is. If Cherki just passed me the ball so I can score… but he didn’t want to, so that’s just how it is!”
