For three years, the renewable energy generated from the farm will be channelled to the national grid

A new 18 megawatt-peak ground-mount solar farm located at PSA Singapore’s Keppel Terminal has commenced operations, Sembcorp Industries said on Thursday (Jan 23).

The solar farm is a joint project between Sembcorp Solar, a wholly owned subsidiary of the energy and urban solutions provider, and port operator PSA Singapore.

It is a short-term project that will operate for a period of about three years. During this time, the renewable energy generated from the solar farm will be channelled to the national grid, Sembcorp said.

Built on 15 hectares (ha) of existing yard space, it is fitted with 30,000 on-site solar panels. It is designed to be modular and flexible, consisting of a mobile transformer and hybrid substations which – along with its solar panels – can be easily redeployed to other sites, the company added.

The solar farm is expected to produce around 22,500 megawatt hours of electricity annually – which is the amount of energy required to power more than 5,000 four-room Housing and Development Board flats in Singapore for one year.

Sembcorp Industries head of renewables business (Singapore and Indonesia) Jen Tan said that the project aims to contribute to Singapore’s solar energy targets and renewable energy ambitions as it transitions to a low-carbon future.

Sembcorp has an energy portfolio of 25.9 gigawatts, including 16.5 gigawatts of gross renewable energy capacity from assets it owns – including projects secured and under construction – across 10 countries. Its urban development projects span more than 14,000 ha throughout Asia.

Shares of Sembcorp were trading 0.2 per cent or S$0.01 lower at S$5.60 as at 1.02 pm on Thursday.
