Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish was among those to offer their support after the city was rocked by a crash at the club’s parade to celebrate winning the Premier League. Twenty-seven people were injured when a car ploughed into supporters on Water Street in the city centre on Monday evening.

Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said a 53-year-old white British man had been arrested at the scene and the incident was not been treated as terrorism. Four people, including a child, were pulled from beneath the vehicle after it was driven into the crowd.

David Kitchin of the North West Ambulance Service said: “We can confirm that our teams treated 20 patients at the scene for minor injuries, and these did not need hospital treatment. Twenty-seven patients in total were taken to hospital by ambulance, and we believe two of those, including one of the children, have sustained serious injuries.”

The incident has left the city reeling and prompted some heartfelt words from former Liverpool player and manager Dalglish, who said: “Shocked, horrified and deeply saddened about what happened at the end of the parade today.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone and their families who have been impacted by today’s tragic event. Our anthem has never felt more appropriate, You’ll Never Walk Alone. Your Liverpool family are behind you.”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wrote on X: “Devastating end to the day… just pray everyone is ok”, while ex-Reds striker Robbie Fowler posted: “Heartbreaking news… absolutely sickened with what’s happened here in Liverpool.”

Ex-Liverpool striker John Aldridge posted: “For all the LFC family to all the people affected from today’s horrific event, YNWA.”

On Monday night, Liverpool wrote in a statement: “We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.” Reds midfielder Curtis Jones shared the statement on his Instagram story with a prayer and heart emoji.

The Premier League posted: “Everyone at the Premier League is shocked by the appalling events in Liverpool this evening, and our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “Football stands together with Liverpool FC and all fans of the club following the horrific incident that has taken place during the trophy parade in the city. From everyone at FIFA, we offer our thoughts and prayers to all those affected.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: “The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.”

He later added: “They are supporting and caring for those injured in these terrible events. Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror.

“The city has a long and proud history of coming together through difficult times. Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.”
