Ruben Amorim’s future remains uncertain amid the Red Devils’ ongoing struggles, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel with a top-class manager already ‘told’ to replace the under-fire boss

Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has previously delivered a ringing endorsement of Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who has been linked with the Old Trafford hot seat. Current United boss Ruben Amorim is facing mounting pressure after Saturday’s crushing 3-1 loss at Brentford.

It is understood that Amorim still has the support of United’s hierarchy for now, but speculation over his future refuses to go away. The Portuguese head coach has managed to secure only 34 points from a potential 99 in the Premier League since taking the reins.

United bosses were compelled to publicly back their manager following last month’s embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town. Reports suggest United have drawn up a three-man shortlist of potential successors should Amorim fail to turn things around.

Former England boss Gareth Southgate, Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Glasner are all reportedly being considered as the heat intensifies on Amorim to halt United’s worrying slump.

Rangnick, who struggled during his own temporary stint at Old Trafford in 2021/22, has previously sung Glasner’s praises in glowing terms.

“For me, Oliver Glasner is currently one of the most exciting coaches – not only in Germany, but in all of Europe. An absolute top coach,” Rangnick told LAOLA1 in March 2023.

Glasner has been showered with accolades for his sterling work at Palace, who are currently enjoying an 18-match unbeaten run across all competitions.

The South London squad clinched the FA Cup last season – stunning Manchester City – before also hoisting the Community Shield with a victory over Liverpool in August.

Palace also notched another win over Arne Slot’s team on Saturday – putting an end to their unbeaten start to the season.

Rumours are now swirling about whether an approach will be made for Glasner before the season concludes, with the Austrian also utilising a back-three system akin to the one Amorim employs.
