Norway are in action against Israel this evening, with Erling Haaland aiming to guide his nation to the World Cup

Manchester City star Erling Haaland missed TWO penalties for Norway in their World Cup qualifier against Israel on Saturday.

Norway were awarded their a penalty in the fifth minute following a foul by forward Dan Biton. Haaland, who stepped up to take it, saw both his initial and retaken attempts saved by goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

Polish referee Szymon Marciniak ordered the first penalty to be retaken after ruling that Peretz had moved off his line. On Haaland’s second attempt, Peretz guessed correctly again and palmed the effort away.

However, the hosts opened the scoring in the 18th minute through Anan Khalaili, before Haaland redeemed himself by doubling Norway’s lead shortly before the half-hour mark.

Moments later, Israel gifted Norway their third goal.

Haaland then bagged two goals in the second half as he looked to lead Norway back to the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

“Qualifying for the World Cup would be like a big nation winning it,” he previously said. “It would be the biggest party of all.”

Norway have their fate on their hands. If they defeat Israel and Italy drop points against Estonia or Israel, the Scandinavians could secure qualification with two games left.

They sit top of Group I on 18 points while Italy are level on nine with Israel. Norway will face Estonia and Italy in November’s international break.

Since 2020, Haaland has so far scored 51 goals for Norway in just 46 games – with the striker reaching the 50-goal landmark in international football in fewer matches than the likes of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
