Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has shared his thoughts on Ruben Amorim amid ongoing speculation around the club’s Portuguese head coach this season.
Manchester United superstar Bruno Fernandes has thrown his support behind under-fire manager Ruben Amorim, despite the swirling rumours about his future at Old Trafford. Amorim has been thrust into the limelight once more this season following a lacklustre start to the 2025/2026 campaign.
After a 3-1 defeat to Brentford three weeks ago, the Portuguese boss was tipped to be the next Premier League manager to get the boot. However, a 2-0 win over Sunderland before the international break took some of the heat off – and a public endorsement from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has since dispelled any immediate concerns about his job security.
Ratcliffe suggested he would give Amorim three years to prove his worth at Old Trafford, despite only amassing 37 points from his last 34 top-tier matches. “Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years,” he declared on The Business podcast. “That’s where I would be. The press, sometimes I don’t understand. They want overnight success.
“They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow. You can’t run a club like Manchester United on kneejerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.”
Ahead of Sunday’s clash with bitter rivals Liverpool, Amorim expressed gratitude for Ratcliffe’s vote of confidence. Fernandes, who himself has faced criticism for his performances this season, is the first player to publicly comment on the English billionaire’s defence of Amorim.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Portugal playmaker shared the squad’s view on Amorim and explained why Ratcliffe’s public backing is beneficial. “It’s good for the club to give some stability,” he said.
“We all know, and I think the manager has spoken about it, results make a manager stay or not. The manager is very aware of that. The players are very aware that we need to improve and to win games to help the manager be more stable and be more confident in what we can do in the moment, in the future.
“I think the club needs some stability, that’s the main thing from Sir Jim that he wants to pass through everyone. We’ve always spoken about giving them time. I think sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture, and from the club side, they need to do that.
“As a player and as a group of players, we believe the manager can help this club get back to where it belongs.” He continued: “I don’t know what the aim of Sir Jim is to say that.
“I think [maybe] to pass some confidence on to the squad, to the staff, to make it look like we are on a good path, not the one we want, but on a good path. We want to improve that. If Sir Jim sees that – the same as the players – that the manager is the right one for the job, it makes it better. We have got two groups looking in the same way.”
