Man Utd urged to complete transfer ideal for Sesko after recent struggles

Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has been tipped to return to Old Trafford in January, with one pundit claiming he would be the perfect mentor for Benjamin Sesko
Ex-Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has been tipped as the ideal mentor for new signing Benjamin Sesko. The Red Devils splashed out on their attack during the summer transfer window, bringing in Premier League-tested talents Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
They also made a significant investment in the European market by snapping up former RB Leipzig forward Sesko, beating off competition from Newcastle United. So far this season, the Slovenian international has netted two goals and provided one assist in his 12 appearances across all competitions.
However, Sesko hit a bump in the road in his last match before the international break – a 2-2 stalemate away at Tottenham – where he was brought on as a second-half substitute only to be quickly taken off due to a suspected knee injury. Consequently, the 22-year-old did not join his national team and has spent the break working towards regaining his fitness.

Reports this week suggest the striker is still a few weeks away from making a comeback, meaning he’s likely to sit out several crucial matches after the international break. As the January transfer window looms, rumours about potential new arrivals are naturally gaining momentum.
One name that has been loosely associated with a move to Old Trafford is ex-striker Welbeck, and pundit Don Hutchison reckons the Brighton forward would be the perfect guide for Sesko as he adjusts to the English top tier.
“I mean, it’d be a brilliant fit,” Hutchison said in an interview with SportCasting. “He’d be a fantastic signing because Danny Welbeck’s one of those players where, if he went back to Man United, it would be like when Jonny Evans returned.
“When Jonny Evans went back there a couple of years ago, he was happy to be a sort of mentor inside the dressing room. He was happy to be a mentor to the players that were playing. He was happy to play his part when needed. He was happy to be on the bench.
“I think Danny Welbeck going to Man United would be a really good fit in terms of he can still play, he can still score goals, he’s still really fit. But he would still have the attitude where it would be a fantastic move forward, being back at Man United with the knowledge that he’d be mentoring the likes of Sesko. I think it would be a perfect move.”
Welbeck progressed through United’s academy system and clocked up more than 140 first-team outings before his switch to Arsenal in 2014.
He subsequently had a stint at Watford prior to his Brighton move in 2020, where he’s experienced a career revival – especially this campaign, netting six times in 11 Premier League matches to date.
This wouldn’t be the first occasion the 34-year-old has been touted for a stunning Old Trafford comeback, with speculation also surfacing around this period last year.
However, at present, there’s no solid evidence suggesting United are plotting a swoop for the striker.
