Marcus Rashford is expected to depart Old Trafford when his loan at Barcelona expires in the summer, and his status already been altered following a new development

Despite any ongoing tensions between Manchester United and Marcus Rashford, the Premier League giants clearly think a lot of their player. Rashford has been rejuvenated on loan at Barcelona this season and could join the Spanish powerhouse permanently in the summer.

However, United have taken the initiative by bestowing a new title upon the player in the middle of his season. And it’s one that could cause consternation among some fans given his standing with the club at the time of his departure.

Elsewhere, United have been devastated to learn another academy product could be set for a spell on the sidelines following “quite a big” injury. Mirror Football dissects all the latest goings on around Old Trafford ahead of Monday’s visit to Wolves.

Rashford’s United status changed

There was a time when Rashford seemed destined for icon status at Old Trafford after he first emerged as a first-team star in early 2016. A lot has transpired over the past decade, and his bond appeared shattered when he first left on loan for Aston Villa almost one year ago.

The relationship was only further complicated when his loan to Barca, complete with a very affordable purchase option, was confirmed in the summer. But United have shown their character by filing Rashford under the ‘Legends’ section on their official website.

The 28-year-old joins exclusive company, with the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Roy Keane, Bryan Robson, Wayne Rooney and Denis Irwin also in that section. The decision reflects United’s perception of the player despite all that has transpired in recent years.

It’s understood Rashford’s relationship with manager Ruben Amorim soured at one point as his career took a negative turn. But while he may not be shining for the Red Devils at present, it clearly doesn’t diminish all he has achieved in red.

Prior to leaving the club on temporary terms, Rashford helped the club secure two FA Cups, a Europa League title and two League Cups. So, while others in the Legends section may have succeeded in more prosperous times, Rashford is still recognised for helping ensure the club remained relevant in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Toby Collyer injury blow

It’s not quite the Camp Nou, but United prospect Toby Collyer was beginning to show some promise at the Hawthorns this season. The 21-year-old joined West Brom in the summer, with a view to gaining valuable minutes before he returned to Old Trafford next year.

However, Collyer has returned to Manchester sooner than expected after suffering an injury Baggies boss Ryan Mason called “quite serious.” And it puts his future prospects with the Championship side in doubt.

“It’s quite a big injury,” Mason told BBC Radio WM. “He’s at United at the minute where they’re assessing him and then in the coming weeks we’ll decide his plan regarding his rehab.

“We’ve got him on loan for the season and normally any loan player that gets an injury that’s a bit more than a small one, more a significant one, it’s only right for the parent club to look at them, check them over, and we’re in dialogue and hopefully he can do his rehab and come back better.”

Collyer has made 13 first-team appearances for United to date and was being tipped as one with potential to earn a place in Amorim’s plans. He has racked up 12 outings for West Brom to date and enjoyed a brief spell in the starting line-up earlier this season prior to a separate setback.
